National Public Lands Day 2026 will be Saturday, September 26. This is a statewide event that provides unique opportunities for Minnesota Master Naturalist Volunteers to participate in our largest single-day of service. Locations across the state will have MNats and others out helping to make Minnesota a better place!
Friends and family are welcome to participate, but must be registered to participate. Everyone will sign a photo release upon site registration. All participants will receive a free NPLD MNat t-shirt as a thank you for participating. You can add additional participant names in the comment field.
Registration by September 4th is required to receive a t-shirt. Registration will close on September 18th for participation in the event without a t-shirt.
Join the Lost Valley Prairie Volunteer Site Stewards for a fall prairie seed collection event!
Tools, instructions, and good camaraderie will be provided. Bring water, lunch, and dress for working in the weather. If you have your own gloves you'd like to use, please bring those as well. Footwear appropriate for outdoor work/hiking is recommended. There are no maintained trails or recreational facilities on this site. We have had some really enjoyable NPLD workdays in the past at Lost Valley Prairie SNA - hosting up to 40 volunteers! We're limited now in scope to 20 due to rusty patch bumble bee restrictions - but should still have quite an enjoyable and educational day out on the prairie! Fall is such a great time out on the prairie!
Seed collections supplies will be provided.

I have a science background (BS in Biology & MS in Molecular Cellular Development Biology & Genetics) and about 9 years ago was looking for some sort of outdoor volunteer work where I could learn more about plants. I stumbled upon the monthly Volunteer Workday at Lost Valley Prairie SNA, and have made a nearly monthly habit of attending these events since then! Its been a great opportunity to help restore native prairie habitat (increasingly important with the changing climate, big rainfall events, etc), spend time outdoors & learn a lot about the prairie ecosystem. In addition, one of the best aspects of the monthly volunteer workday at Lost Valley has been the opportunity to connect with the public - to share the importance of maintaining this biodiversity - supporting so many species of insects & birds. Some of the most riveting shared outings have been in the fall - where hillsides of liatris are covered by monarchs, when the importance of maintaining this habitat becomes so clear! In January 2020 I was added as site co-site steward for Lost Valley Prairie SNA so I'm looking forward continuing to work there!
Inspired by Volunteer workdays at Lost Valley Prairie SNA, in 2019 - a co-worker & I lead/co-lead a series of 3 workplace habitat restoration events for 20-50 fellow employees in partnership with Mississippi Park Connection/National Park Service. There were multiple benefits to making these events happen for my workplace, but it was great empowering co-workers to get out & make a difference, do something novel that they hadn't maybe had a chance to do previously, and raise awareness of the need for maintaining a biodiverse environment. Those events were incredibly rewarding efforts, and routinely come up in workplace conversations!
